I have extensive experience coaching engineers and architects to help them reach their full potential as technical leaders. This experience comes both from my time as an engineering manager and through independent mentoring outside of formal roles.
I have worked with individuals at many different stages of their careers, from engineers early in their professional journey through to lead engineers and architects operating at senior levels.
The goal of these sessions is to help technical professionals develop the skills, mindset, and confidence required to operate effectively in leadership roles.
Areas of Coaching
Coaching sessions are tailored to the individual, but common areas of focus include:
Leading a Specific Project
Supporting engineers or architects who are responsible for leading a significant technical initiative.
This may include guidance on:
- Planning and roadmap development.
- Stakeholder engagement and communication.
- Working effectively across multiple teams.
- Building trust and gaining organisational buy-in.
Through regular sessions, I help individuals navigate the challenges of leading complex projects and identify the most effective ways to move initiatives forward.
Strategic Systems Thinking
Helping individuals develop the ability to think about systems and platforms at a strategic level.
This includes techniques for:
- Identifying strategic technical work.
- Framing proposals for architectural change.
- Aligning technical improvements with business goals.
- Contributing effectively to company roadmaps
Career Growth and Development Planning
During the initial sessions we will work together to understand the individual’s strengths, areas for development, and long-term career aspirations.
From this, we will create a structured development plan focused on strengthening key skills and building the experience needed to reach their desired career trajectory.
Managing a Technical Team
For individuals who are responsible for managing engineering teams, coaching can focus on developing leadership and management capabilities.
Topics may include:
- Structuring and prioritising work within a team.
- Developing and mentoring team members.
- Building balanced teams with complementary skill sets.
- Managing and supporting high-performing engineers.
Engagement Format
Coaching sessions take place on a regular cadence, agreed at the start of the engagement. Typically this will be a one-hour session every two weeks, or a one-hour session once per month.
During the first session we will explore:
- The individual’s experience and current role.
- The areas where they are seeking coaching.
- Any specific projects or challenges they are currently facing.
- Their longer-term career goals.
This allows us to define a structure and focus for future sessions.
The coaching approach is fully tailored to the individual, ensuring that sessions remain relevant to their needs and professional development.
Rates
Coaching sessions are charged at half a day’s rate per session. This reflects not only the session itself, but also the preparation and follow-up work required to ensure each session delivers meaningful value.
In most cases, coaching engagements are sponsored by the individual’s employer as part of their professional development, although other arrangements can be discussed if required.
